TPE AND TPU can't tell the difference

 

TPE material: blend type alloy thermoplastic elastomer. In addition to the SBC base elastomer, the mixing system contains at least one or more other complex components, the number of components depends on the performance requirements of TPE materials.

 

TPU material: polymeric thermoplastic elastomer. For the polymerization of TPU and related monomers, TPU is a polymer material made of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) or toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and other diisocyanate molecules and macromolecular polyols, low molecular polyols (chain extender). Its molecular structure is composed of the rigid segment obtained by the reaction of diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) or toluene diisocyanate (TDI) with chain extender and the flexible segment obtained by the reaction of diisocyanate (MDI) or toluene diisocyanate (TDI) with macromolecular polyols.

2. Specific gravity difference

 

The specific gravity of TPE ranges from 0.89 to 1.3, while TPU ranges from 1.0 to 1.4. In fact, they are used in the process, mainly in the form of blend, so the specific gravity changes greatly!

 

3, the difference between oil resistance

 

TPU has good oil resistance, while TPE is difficult to achieve oil resistance. TPE has a soft, comfortable and smooth feel due to the relatively smooth molecular chain structure of SEBS

 

4, the difference between temperature resistance

 

TPE is -60 ℃ to 105 ℃, TPU is -60 ℃ to 80 ℃

 

5. Difference between resilience and wear resistance

 

The resilience and wear resistance of TPU are better than that of TPE, which is mainly due to the difference of molecular chain structure. In addition, compared with polymerized TPU, the microstructure and properties of TPE are less balanced. The multiple components of TPE have a negative effect on its resilience. Especially for TPE with high hardness, a large proportion of polypropylene components reduces the resilience of TPE, and the products are prone to deformation under the continuous action of external forces.

 

6, the difference in the range of hardness

 

TPE has a wide hardness adjustment space: its hardness can generally be adjusted within 0~100A, and even can provide ultra-soft TPE less than 0A(expressed as Shaw C or Shaw OO). The hardness range of TPU is 35~ 90A,50~80D. Among them, the most common hardness is 80~95A. TPU with a hardness of 50~80D is seldom used in practice. TPU with hardness of 35~75A has high material cost.

TPE and TPU have similar performance and cannot be distinguished by the naked eye. However, there are some simple ways to distinguish TPE from TPU.

 

1: pinch by hand pinch by hand, mainly to see the resilience. TPE elastic recovery is slow, and TPU elastic recovery is fast, because TPU material structure is polymer homogeneous structure, belonging to polymer resin class. TPE is an alloy material with multi-phase structure aggregation formed by blending of multiple components. High hardness TPE processing is prone to product deformation, and in all hardness ranges, TPU shows excellent elasticity, and products are not easy to deformation. If the hand is not easy to operate, you can use a clip, clip for 24 hours, it will be easier to see how difficult to recover.

 

2. In terms of hand feeling, TPE feels delicate and TPU feels rough. From their hardness can roughly reflect a point of difference, TPE belongs to low hardness, more excellent in touch comfort, TPU belongs to high hardness, more excellent in elasticity and strength.

 

3: when TPE burns with fire, the flame is yellow on the top and blue on the bottom, and there are slight bubbles at the bottom of the flame. The smell is special aroma with oil smell (oil smell is PP component burning smell). TPU burning flame is basically yellow, foaming at the bottom of the flame, there is a slight explosion, with a certain excitant odor.

 

4: Take a closer look Although most TPE and TPU products are black, there are also transparent products. For transparent products, THE transparency of TPU is better than that of TPE, and it is not as easy to stick as transparent TPE.

 

After the detailed introduction of the differences between TPE and TPU, we know that TPE and TPU are both soft materials with good rubber elasticity. In comparison, TPE is more excellent in touch comfort, while TPU is more flexible and strong.
