The difference between polyester TPU and polyether TPU in processing

 

 

 

1.Polyester TPU is different from polyether TPU in raw materials and formula

The main raw materials for the production of polyether TPU(Ether) are 4-4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG), 1, 4-butanediol (BDO), among which MDI is about 40%, PTMEG about 40%, and BDO about 20%.

 

 

The raw materials of polyester TPU(Ester) are mainly 4-4 '-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), 1, 4-butanediol (BDO) and adipic acid (AA), among which the MDI dosage is about 40%, AA about 35% and BDO about 25%.

 

 

2.Molecular weight distribution and influence difference between polyester TPU and polyether TPU

The relative molecular weight distribution of polyether follows the probability equation of Poisson's distribution, and the relative molecular weight distribution is relatively narrow. However, the relative molecular weight distribution of polyester diols is subject to schulz-flory's "most feasible distribution", and the relative molecular weight distribution is relatively wide.

 

 

he molecular weight of the soft segment has a great influence on the mechanical properties of polyurethane. Assuming that the molecular weight of polyurethane is the same, if the soft segment is polyester, the strength of polyurethane elastomer will increase with the increase of molecular weight of polyester glycol. If the soft segment is polyether, the strength of polyurethane elastomer decreases with the increase of the molecular weight of polyether diol, but the elongation increases. This is because the polyester soft segment has strong polarity and high molecular weight structure regularity, which is beneficial to improve the strength, while the polyether soft segment has weak polarity. 3.The difference of mechanical properties between polyester TPU and polyether TPU

Polyether and polyester are composed of polyol oligomer (polyol). The soft segment takes up the majority of polyurethane elastomers, and the properties of different oligomers of polyols are different from those of polyurethane prepared with diisocyanate. The mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomers and foams are better with strong polarities. Because the polyurethane made of polyester contains highly polar ester groups, this polyurethane can not only form hydrogen bonds between hard segments, but also partially form hydrogen bonds between polar groups on the soft segments, so that the hard phase can be more evenly distributed in the soft phase, playing the role of elastic crosslinking points. Some polyesters can form soft crystallization at room temperature, which affects the properties of polyurethane. The strength, oil resistance and thermal oxidation stability of polyester polyurethane were higher than that of PPG polyether polyurethane, but the hydrolysis resistance was worse than that of polyether polyurethane.

 

 

4.The difference of hydrolysis stability between polyester TPU and polyether TPU

The hydrolysis resistance of polyester thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer was improved after it was protected by carbonated diimine. Polyether ester thermoplastic polyurethane and polyether thermoplastic polyurethane have the best hydrolysis resistance at high temperature.

 

 

Polyester is vulnerable to the invasion of water molecules, and the acid generated by hydrolysis can catalyze the further hydrolysis of polyester. Polyester species have a certain influence on the physical properties and water resistance of elastomers. The water resistance of polyester polyurethane elastomer increased with the increase of methylene. Ester group content is small, its water resistance is also better. Similarly, the water resistance of polyurethane elastomer synthesized from polyester with long chain dibasic acid is better than that of polyester polyurethane with short chain dibasic acid.

 

 

5.The difference between polyester TPU and polyether TPU

Polyester soft thermoplastic urethanes are subject to microbial attack in prolonged contact with moist soil, whereas polyether soft or hard thermoplastic urethanes and polyether thermoplastic urethanes or hard thermoplastic urethanes are generally free from microbial attack.

 

 

6.Price difference between polyester TPU and polyether TPU

The price of polyether polyurethane elastomers is much higher than that of polyester polyurethane elastomers. The main reasons are as follows:

 

 

Polyether polyurethane has good hydrolysis resistance, low temperature resistance and bending resistance.

 

 

Compared with polyester polyols, polyether polyols, which constitute the soft segment of polyurethane TPU, are more expensive for raw materials.

 

 

The production process of polyether polyols is more complex than that of polyester polyols.

 

 

It is difficult to control the process conditions of polyether polyols in the reaction process.
